Framed Print of Lime kiln on Fredericksholm in the harbour of Marstal
Lime kiln on Fredericksholm in the harbour of Marstal. In 1825, around 100 sailors built the 1 km long harbour pier and the lime kiln on the small island that protects the harbour to the east. As it was King Frederick's birthday when construction began, the island was named Fredericksholm. The island was raised with ballast stones from the ships. The long harbour pier provided additional protection. Work was carried out on the ships on Fredericksholm and smaller yachts were also built. From 1863, the island was rented out for lime burning. A bridge was built together with the lime kiln and the lime was transported to the island on lorries. The lime was brought by ship from Fakse Bay, Marstal, Denmark
