Framed Print of Planisphaerium Braheum
Planisphaerium Braheum, a famous historical celestial map illustrating the geo-heliocentric world model of the Danish astronomer Tycho Brahe. The engraving is by Andreas Cellarius and was published in 1660 or 1661 in the Atlas Harmonia Macrocosmica. At the centre of the universe is the immobile Earth. The sun and the moon revolve around the earth, while the other planets (Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter and Saturn) orbit the sun. The illustration contains decorative elements such as putti pulling on the curtains and groups of scholars studying instruments such as globes and quadrants at the bottom left and right. At the bottom right is also a portrait of Tycho Brahe himself, with his observatory Uranienborg in the background, digitally restored reproduction from a 17th century original, authentic, exact date of depiction unknown.
