Framed Print of Malmo City Library's book bus in 1951
Malmo City Library's book bus in 1951. The bus had stopped in Lerhamn, a small coastal village in Skane, about ten kilometres northwest of Hoganas. The book bus visited places outside the town centre, giving people the chance to borrow books just like at a regular library. The photo was published in issue no. 46 of the magazine Se in 1951, in a feature about the book bus visit to Lerhamn. The caption read: Harry Svensson, bread delivery man for Kullens bakery Nyhamnslage, forgets his freshly baked loaves. The appetite for reading is strong among country folk. Sweden introduced book buses (bokbussar) in the 1940s to bring library services to rural areas. These mobile libraries were especially important in sparsely populated regions, offering access to literature, education and culture where permanent libraries were unavailable. Malmo's book bus was among the early pioneers, and by the 1950s, the service had become a symbol of democratic access to knowledge across the Swedish countryside. Kristoffersson BE24-11
